“Solitary Style”

We didn’t accompany the kids while they took pictures. We only showed them how to use the camera and said, “Go wherever. Just come back when you run out of film.” As a result, there is a wide variety in subject matter – wherever feet will run. Here you have two pros, the model and the photographer, showing nothing but grace and skill. This image is emblematic of the the kids we shot with in Nova Holanda – confident, humble, reflective…and, of course, just kids.

“ ‘ce vai ficar uma beleza! ”

Among the first subjects the kids chose to shoot on this main street in the neighborhood of Nova Holanda were the two or three beauty salons nearby.
…now, after sitting for this list of services, one cannot help but to emerge flyer than fly. So, we call this one: “ ‘ce vai ficar uma beleza! ”
“YOU are gonna look beautiful!”

“Eu vou tirar uma foto da minha avó!”

We walked down a major street of the neighborhood called Nova Holanda to find some children willing to take pictures. Once we had a few and started teaching how to use the Brownie camera, Mateo, 5 years old, seized on the idea quickly and began to jump up and say over and over, with ‘wow!’ anticipation in his voice, “Eu vou tirar uma foto da minha avó!” -- “I’m going to take a picture of my grandmother!” When we later developed his photo and saw this image, we had ‘wow’ in our voices, too.

"See What I am Saying"

With the Brownie camera, the double exposure is a likely mistake since, after taking a picture, the film must be wound manually to the next frame. And it’s just human to forget to wind. However, as far as mistakes go, these are the ones that we sometimes love to make because they can capture powerful images that we probably could not find by searching for them directly. Here, we have Mateo and Bruna, two thinking faces, two different scenes on the same street, two stories told from that sunny, December 1st day …in one image.
